• splitting up compound nouns and explaining the individual parts
• Identifying the word as a noun / adjective / verb
• drawing connections to experiences or everyday life
• Using words of the same family
• Change the word order, split sentences up
• Don’t get stuck and panic
• Simplify the sentence
